"Mi Casa, Tu Casa – Minha Casa, Sua Casa" (My House, Your House) is a project developed by Hands On Human Rights, in partnership with UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency) and Jornal Joca (former partner), with the goal of promoting support and contributing to the continued education of Venezuelan refugee and migrant children and adolescents in Roraima. The initiative stems from the understanding that access to reading, information, and safe educational spaces is fundamental for the protection of rights, integral development, and the reconstruction of life projects in contexts of forced displacement.
Through a broad national mobilization, the project collected more than 37,000 books, far exceeding the initially established goal. This significant result reflects the engagement of civil society, schools, and, above all, young volunteers committed to solidarity, education, and human rights.
With these resources, at least 13 library cabinets were installed in shelters and other reception spaces in Roraima. Libraries function as environments for learning, social interaction, and community strengthening, guaranteeing refugee children and adolescents continuous access to books, educational content, and informational materials in a context of extreme vulnerability.
Youth empowerment is one of the central pillars of Mi Casa, Tu Casa. Young people from more than 80 public and private schools throughout Brazil, in addition to many independent participants, led fundraising, awareness-raising, letter-writing, and social mobilization efforts. By placing young people at the center of the action, the project not only directly impacts the lives of refugee children but also forms a new generation that is aware, co-responsible, and engaged in promoting human rights, education, and a culture of welcoming.
